Let me show this idea to you simply.
There was the early prophesy concerning Satan and Eve:
"And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel."-Genesis 3:15
Is this something that happens once and then is over? Or is this something that can continue to be true over and over again?
We see this literally fulfilled in the story of Jael (Yahweh is God) and Sisera (Snake):
"But Jael, Heber’s wife, picked up a tent peg and a hammer and went quietly to him while he lay fast asleep, exhausted. She drove the peg through his temple into the ground, and he died." Judges 4:21
We ALSO see it literally fulfilled in the story of David and Goliath:
"As the Philistine moved closer to attack him, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet him. Reaching into his bag and taking out a stone, he slung it and struck the Philistine on the forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell face-down on the ground." 1 Samuel 17:48-49
This prophesy continues to be fulfilled to this day, literally and figuratively.
Prophesy does not always mean a singular event, it can also refer to a fulfillment and revelation of who the God of the universe is. Do I believe there is an end to this world as we know it? Of course! Is this is the beginning of the "birth pains" spoken to us regarding the end? I think so. Did people believe these same things during the reign of Hitler? Yes. Did the early Christians believe it was the end when Nero reigned? Yes. Does this mean that everyone has always been wrong or believed in something that wasn't real? Not at all! It's the fulfillment of God's word, over and over again. I believe the messiah has come in Jesus, yet I also believe in His return, it's the same messiah, just a continual fulfillment of prophesy. Perhaps...(I'm not making definitive statements here, I never do, take it all with a grain of salt please)...perhaps the 'return' of Christ is New Testament fulfillment of prophesy for Christians and Old Testament fulfillment of prophesy for Jews. Either way, it's God's word revealing itself in a living and active way in our world today and in history and in our future.
