Munch Munch Munch

Is it that time already? Our little bub is growing up fast and started solids this past weekend! How fun, and very, very messy! Australians are very big into making their own baby food, in fact, it's quite expensive and difficult to buy baby food other than the basic rice cereal and one brand of organic food that comes in mini-bags. So, I thought I would give it a shot, and guess what? It's SO EASY and SO CHEAP! Now we have a freezer full of baby food for the Bean for the next two months and I spent a whopping ten bucks. It's perfect for me because now I don't have to worry about it for a long time and by the time I need to re-stock the freezer, she'll be onto new tastes and textures anyway. So there might be some debate about how much time and energy and cost goes into making your own food, but I'm convinced otherwise...

Here are the pics of the butternut pumpkin. One half of a squash, diced, boiled, pureed and frozen. Done and done. 15 minutes and $2 later, we have 36 - 1 oz 'meals' for Bina! Repeat with potato, beet, carrot, apples, pears, etc. Ta-Da! If you have more than one pot, you can quicken the process by boiling more than one food at a time. You can use anything to freeze it in...ice-cube trays work great and you can put them in plastic zip-lock bags after, or you can get inventive and combine cubes of food for an entire day in separate zip-locks. I did purchase some fantastic small containers that come in 1 oz, 2 oz and 3 oz sizes; perfect for taking 'on-the-go' instead of dealing with the ice-cubed-food.

Some might criticize the process as boiling out the nutrients, but at this stage, it doesn't matter. The food is combined with breastmilk/formula to create a very liquidy consistency as it's about training her to eat from a spoon and discover different flavors...rather than being a full 'meal.' Or, of course, you can just do it the old fashioned way, she loves it! ;)

  1. Wow! Liv wants nothing to do with food so far. We've tried rice cereal, squash and last night an avocado. Nope. I want to make her food, too, but want to wait and see what she actually likes first. Since you say it's so easy and cheap, though, maybe I'll just make a bunch and if she doesn't like some of it, no big deal. I LOVE that Bina is an eater already. Big Girl!!! Where did you get the containers???
